Joel Piaskowski – Hyundai Chief Designer BIOGRAPHY
Joel Piaskowski, Hyundai’s Chief Designer at the North American design studios in Irvine, California is in Australia for the first time to showcase the highly anticipated Hyundai Genesis Coupé at the Melbourne International Motor Show.
Since joining the Hyundai team five years ago, Piaskowski has had a hand in leading the future of Hyundai global design. He is the man behind several key Hyundai concept models, including the HCD8, HCD9 Talus, and HCD10 Hellion. His other accolades include the interior and exterior design for Hyundai’s best selling Santa Fe SUV, as well as, the sleek design of the Veracruz and Elantra exteriors.
Piaskowski’s career has spanned almost 20 years. Before he joined Hyundai, Piaskowski designed for the Chevrolet, Pontiac, Opel/ Vauxhal/ Holden and Buick brands at General Motors. There he worked on production based interior and exterior design and also completed assignments involving advanced, concept and brand character.
Piaskowski spent much of his youth drawing and designing cars with his father (a prominent car designer in the U.S.), before deciding to follow in his fathers footsteps.
Piaskowski is a graduate of the Center for Creative Studies (now College for Creative Studies) in Detroit, Michigan where he earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree specialising in Transportation Design.
He also served a one-year tour at the Opel Design Center in Russelsheim, Germany; worked at the Isuzu Design Center in Fujisawa, Japan for six months which included a one-month sub-assignment in Torino, Italy and finally worked at Suzuki’s Design Center in Hamamatsu, Japan.
