In early 2014, Hyundai Motor Company Australia and the Hyundai National Dealer Network came together in a collaboration which would see the creation of Hyundai Help for Kids. This partnership was established to provide grants to a range of organisations focused on delivering assistance to children and the families who support them, through sport, culture, education, health, community engagement, and social welfare initiatives Hyundai Help for Kids will provide vital funding and where appropriate vehicle assistance.

The program hopes to grant close to $1.5 million to not-for-profit organisations that support Australian youth under the age of 18. Funding is raised via 50:50 Hyundai and Hyundai Dealer contributions from every new vehicle sold from 1st January, 2014. Halfway through its first year and Hyundai Help for Kids has supported selected beneficiaries with over $700,000 of funding for a variety of projects, events and ventures around the country.

In April this year Hyundai Help for Kids announced four new beneficiaries; Ronald McDonald House Charities Australia, Australian Cervical Cancer Foundation, Clown Doctors, and Little Wings. Receiving financial and/or vehicular assistance from Hyundai Help for Kids has allowed each of these organisations to continue their vital work to support young Australians and has seen a number of exciting programs come to fruition.

One such event, a perfect example of the scope and possibilities of Hyundai Help for Kids, took place in Sydney. On two perfect days, the Helping Hands of Hyundai joined together to unite three of the programs beneficiaries in a exceptional event which would see Ronald McDonald House Charities, Little Wings and the Clown Doctors working together to bring joy and delight to some wonderful children currently receiving lifesaving treatment at Westmead and Randwick Children’s Hospitals.

This unique opportunity to work together achieved a coammon goal, delivering joy and happiness to sick children. Each of the individual organisations played an invaluable part in the event which would see children attending a performance of Disney On Ice, viewing it from the comfort of a corporate suite, and enjoying hospitality including lunch, beverages and special take-home merchandise packs.

It was an end-to-end operation which allowed the families to enjoy a genuine day together when they could forget for just a moment the challenges they were facing, and just have some good old fashioned family fun time – something most of us take for granted!

“The chance to collaborate on an event with three of the Hyundai Help for Kids beneficiaries and to make this a day to remember for these special families really encapsulates the spirit of Hyundai Help for Kids,” said Bill Thomas, General Manager PR, Hyundai Motor Company Australia. “It perfectly demonstrates the mission we have for the program, a mission which is clearly shared by our wonderful partners, the National Hyundai Dealer Network, and the tireless efforts of our recipient charities and organisations.”

For many of the families the opportunity to have a complete ‘day-off’ is impossible. Treatments for their children, the organisation of logistics and simply having to be on constant ‘carer’ duty means this special day would simply be impossible to orchestrate.

Ronald McDonald House Charities Australia® make life that little bit easier for seriously ill children and their families by offering support through a wide range of programs focused on making the journey to recovery as easy as possible. Ronald McDonald House Westmead and Randwick offered respite and comfort for our guest families while their child was undergoing treatment, and prepared the families for their big day out in readiness for the Disney spectacular.

With a troupe of excited children, it was time to get on the road and head to the event. Little Wings is a not-for-profit organisation supporting the Oncology Unit at The Children’s Hospital Network. Their goal is to assist children with cancer while they are undergoing treatment, by providing a free flight service to and from the hospital. For our special day the team at Little Wings provided on-ground transport for these Disney On Ice special guests collecting them from their Ronald McDonald House location and transferring them to the event.

Hyundai Help for Kids has provided Little Wings with vehicles to assist with patient transfers from airport to hospital facilities, and we were lucky enough to have some very willing volunteers join us for the day and act as Little Wings chauffers taking our guests out to Sydney’s Allphones Arena at Homebush and making the return journey delivering our precious cargo back to Ronald McDonald House Westmead and Randwick at the end of the day.

Earlier, we mentioned a fun filled family day, and it simply wouldn’t be as fun without a stack of laughs ... so bring on the Clown Doctors! The Humour Foundation is an Australian charity dedicated to promoting and delivering the health benefits of humour, joy, and happiness and through the Clown Doctors program delivers the benefits of laughter to those who need it most. Dr. Smarty Pants and Dr. S. Duffer entertained the children (and the mums and dads) pre-show while guests were enjoying their lunch in the Hyundai Eastern Region corporate suite. With their signature style the team dispensed huge doses of fun and laughter to keep the troupe amused and helping to make this a very special day.

Around the country there are small armies of carers, volunteers, friends, and medical professionals who work tirelessly to keep the wheels turning for seriously ill children and their families. From flying to rural communities to transport children to specialist medical facilities, providing prescriptive laughter during often extensive and invasive treatment periods, to offering a comfortable, welcoming home-away-from home Hyundai Help for Kids is there.
