Mother’s Day is always a special date on the calendar, because your mother is always a special person in your life. She deserves to be spoilt and surprised.

Do your Mother’s Day gift ideas consist of slippers, flowers, chocolates, manicures and other predictable presents? Perhaps this is the year to try something new. Here are five ways to spoil Mum that she might not expect!

1. CROSS AN ITEM OFF HER TO DO-LIST

Every mum seems to have a never-ending to-do list of little jobs and big jobs. Buy this, drop off that, take the Hyundai for its routine check-up, and so on. You may not be able to handle it all, but you can definitely find at least one thing that has been on her mind lately – and do it yourself. She’ll be thrilled to put a big red line through that chore, and even more thrilled that you were so thoughtful.

2. MAKE HER AN OLD-FASHIONED PHOTO ALBUM

The family photo album is something of a lost art in the age of social media, but you’ll get a great big ‘LIKE’ from Mum when you whip out a brand new personalised album filled with prints of all her favourite memories from recent holidays, birthdays and get-togethers. If possible, slip in a few happy snaps she has never seen. And if you’re really feeling inspired, use the best pictures to create a proper hard-cover photo book for the coffee table.

3. JOIN A COOKING CLASS TOGETHER

Forget boring cookbooks – take Mum straight to the source of the sauce! Sign the two of you up for a cooking class to learn exotic cuisines, fusion recipes and modern techniques. Whether Mum’s a passionate foodie or a casual cook, this is a fun way to learn fresh skills and enjoy some time together away from the house.

4. TAKE HER FOR A DAY / NIGHT OUT

Believe it or not, Mum probably used to go out a lot more before you came along and kept her busy for a couple of decades. Wouldn’t it be nice to go back to the good old days and take her on a coastal drive, go out to dinner at a fancy restaurant, or get the best seats in the house for one of her favourite singers or musicals? This is a chance to express your love and gratitude with an amazing experience that can’t be wrapped in gift paper.

5. GIVE HER A GIFT THAT KEEPS ON GIVING

Why buy Mum one book or bottle of wine when you can treat her to a gift that keeps on giving throughout the year? We’re talking about the sometimes-underrated annual subscription. It might be a weekly magazine, a wine of the month club, or anything else delivered to her door on a regular basis. A subscription card may not look like much when she first opens it, but the gesture lasts forever … well, at least until you renew it next Mother’s Day.
