Venture to the northernmost golf course on the East Coast of Australia for a tropical experience beyond the fairways, greens and sand traps. Nestled between the Coral Sea on one side and the Great Dividing Range on the other, with kangaroos lazing under the trees, this is as close to Aussie golf paradise as you are likely to find. The course itself is only nine holes with dual tees, so take your time and soak up the tranquillity of the bay, the bushland and the region’s imposing backdrop, Mount Cook. It’s just you and nature on a beautiful North Queensland day.

Add these to your itinerary too: Paradise Palms, Palm Cove; Bribie Island Golf Club, Bribie Island; Glades Golf Club, Robina.

You could be driving a long time trying to discover an Australian golf location more picturesque than Leura Golf Club, set in the World Heritage-listed Blue Mountains less than two hours’ drive west of Sydney. There’s something beautiful to see from just about every tee box and turn, but it’s the view at the 14th, perched high above the Jamison Valley, that will really take your breath away. Don’t forget to pack your camera. And if you’re spending more time in this relaxing region, enjoy the scenic cliffs and canyons along the Valley of the Waters National Pass Trail – no green fees required.

Add these to your itinerary too: Bonville Golf Course, Coffs Harbour; Moore Park Golf Club, Sydney; Narooma Golf Club, Narooma

It wouldn’t be the golf trip of a lifetime without playing at least one of the flagship courses on the world-famous Melbourne Sandbelt. Expect superb year-round course conditions, tricky bunker shots and fast greens – in other words, a true championship golf course you’ll be proud to have finished. While the ‘Home of the Australian Masters’ is slightly more manageable than some of its monstrous Sandbelt neighbours, the course will certainly prove challenging for the weekend hacker. Still, who doesn’t want to tackle a course they’ve admired on television? Note: The course is open only to members and their guests, but tee times are also available for members of registered interstate golf clubs. This is one club you’d better contact in advance – but it’s well worth the effort!

Add these to your itinerary too: St Andrews Beach Golf Course, Fingal; Barwon Heads Golf Club, Barwon Heads; Ballarat Golf Club, Ballarat

Golf Photo 5 Golf Trip Barnbougle TAS.jpg

The chance to play this stunning coastal course is reason alone to park your car on the Spirit of Tasmania and head across Bass Strait. Quite simply, the highly renowned Barnbougle Dunes is a breathtaking golf adventure. You’ll feel like you’ve escaped to a traditional links course in Scotland or Ireland, such is the magnificence of the design and natural undulation of the greens. Among its many challenges, the course features the largest bunker in the Southern Hemisphere at the fourth hole. But don’t worry, you’ll find at least some respite in the wider-than-average fairways.

Add these to your itinerary too: Barnbougle Lost Farm, Bridport; Tasmania Golf Club, Cambridge; Launceston Golf Club, Launceston

Pack plenty of snacks and supplies for this one – it might take you a week to reach your clubhouse of choice. Stretching almost 1,400 km from Ceduna, SA, to Kalgoorlie, WA, the Nullarbor Links is comfortably the world’s longest golf course. Pass the 26 windmills of Penong, conquer the famous 90 Mile Straight and glimpse into the gold mining past at Norseman as you play the most diverse round of your life. Fortunately, in between holes, you can enjoy this unique perspective on the sheer vastness of the Australian outback from the comfort of your vehicle.

Add these to your itinerary too: Links Lady Bay, Lady Bay; Links Port Kennedy, Port Kennedy; The Cut Golf Course, Dawesville
