The Socceroos’ Hyundai A-League representatives stood tall, with record international goal-scorer Tim Cahill (Melbourne City), Josh Risdon (Western Sydney Wanderers), James Troisi and Mark Milligan (both Melbourne Victory) all playing important roles over the two legs against Honduras. All four players now have their sights firmly set on making the trip to Russia next year. Their outstanding efforts highlight the strength of the Hyundai A-League not only as a tough, exciting competition, but also a genuine stepping stone for players to achieve higher honours.
Australia played 22 qualifying matches over 29 months, the most games it has ever taken any nation to qualify for the world game’s biggest tournament. But the grueling campaign was all worth it for that moment when 77,060 fans at ANZ Stadium, and an entire nation glued to its television sets, breathed a collective sigh of relief. On more than one occasion the Socceroos were forced to dig deep and survive. We now know one thing for sure – this team will never give up the fight. Football powerhouse Italy will not be at the World Cup finals, but Australia definitely will be!
While the World Cup kicks off in six months, the Socceroos’ preparations are well and truly underway. Can we dare to dream of World Cup glory? In football, anything is possible. A-League heroes Cahill, Risdon, Troisi and Milligan should be joined by the likes of overseas-based stars Mat Ryan, Tom Rogic, Mathew Leckie and Tomi Juric in a formidable squad packed with international experience. Bring on Russia 2018!
